Is Food the Enemy?

There was a time when food was my friend. There was a time that food was as
comforting as a warm blanket on a cold winter night. Food hit the sweetest spot of my taste
buds and released the perfect level of chemicals in my brain causing a sense of unspeakable joy.
But now… Now food is like an abuser, offering the most beautiful bouquet of flowers, with the
sharpest thorns. Food has been my friend when I was lonely, comfort when I was sad, and
pleasure when I was in pain. It’s been better than any prescription med. But now…

In our youth, our bodies can handle abuse. We take the punches, clean our wounds and
live to fight another day. However, year after year we get a little weaker. Our joints, organs, colon, brain, etc. can’t continue to take the same beating over and over again. The beating from our sneaky enemy is weakening us day by day. Autoimmune diseases, cancer, and diabetes are becoming far too common. Could these diseases be the result of the enemy? Could this enemy be the delicious food we all hold so dear?
Genesis 2:29 says “And God said, behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which
is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, which is the fruit of the tree yielding seed; to
you it shall be for meat.” God wouldn’t give us food that would cause us all this sickness and
pain. So, can food really be the enemy… or is “food” really the issue at all? Food is defined as a
nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to
maintain life and growth. Again, I ask, does that sound like something that should be causing
sickness and pain?
To sum it up, it sounds like food is a nutritious gift from God, not disease causing and
definitely not “the enemy”. What else could we be consuming throughout the day that is
causing harm? Processed “food”, fast “food”, GMO “food”, antibiotic injected “food”, and foods
full of dyes, chemicals and fillers may need to be considered. Truly take the time to think about
it. How much God intended food do we ingest daily compared to the other categories of
“food”. Fine dining doesn’t get a pass either. Albeit better than a drive through meal, please
don’t think they are ignoring their profit margins to make sure you get the best quality
ingredients.
Food is not the enemy, not real food anyway. Are our choices the enemy? We have
chosen the immediate pleasures of manufactured heightened taste and convenience, over our
health and that of our children. Could the enemy be our own mind, that has succumbed to the
marketing tactics we are bombarded with daily? Could the enemy be our culture that accepts
tomato sauce on pizza as a vegetable in school lunches? Could it be a healthcare system that is
reactive instead of proactive? Is the enemy highly addictive high fructose corn syrup that is
purposely put in most processed foods to make us buy more of the product? Are we readily
accepting these things? We eat our tasty fried food, juicy double burgers with cheese and
sweet treats that were manufactured in factories like objects of destruction, instead of eating
healing nutritious food.
Again, food is not the enemy, not real food anyway. So, who or what is?
